So, the day has finally arrived, after months of teasers, hints, and shifty half reveals; that real live Monsterpocalypse: Big in Japan previews have started to get released in all their statted, product-shotted glory. We’ve seen a couple of new monsters so far… so would you like to see another?
I just happen to have an exclusive preview for today, and he’s definitely an interesting beast, but not for any of the reasons you’d expect. Take a good first look at the Earth Elemental Champion, Tectomoc.
• Beat Back (Brawl)
• Power Gorge (Brawl)
• Steady
I know you just did a double take. So did I when I received the preview material. You’re looking at Monsterpocalypse’s new champion for the title of simplest monster. With only 3 abilities, a record low, Alpha Tectomoc comes bearing no tricks. What he does bring is a big, nasty fist to the table. Beat Back is one of the best triggers a monster can get, and coupled with a brawl stat like 7*3, it shouldn’t be difficult to hit easily and hard, especially for an Alpha form. Five defense and five speed certainly sting a little, but that’s tempered by the massive health stat of 7 and the ever-helpful Steady skill. Power Gorge helps you to ramp up to the even sillier Ultra Tectomoc…
…Wait, what? Five speed, five defense, and five health on a Hyper form? What sort of tomfoolery are you trying to pull over on us, Privateer Press?
Ultra Tectomoc is certainly an interesting creature. His body stats actually go down from his Alpha form, but in return he gets a number of perks. With his gargantuan brawl and power attack stats, along with his Chain Attack brawl trigger, any time that Tectomoc connects with the opponent while in Ultra is guaranteed to cause several points of damage. Also worth noting is the curious Tenacious skill. This ability, while not new persay, hasn’t been seen on a figure before. Tenacious makes Ultra Tectomoc immune to all hazards, an ability which should go far in tempering his poor defenses. One thing I would like to point out is that I was not told what Ultra Tectomoc’s hyper cost would be; the only clue is the MonsterInsider blog post saying that it would be “low”. This, Ultra Tectomoc’s low defense and health, and the Alpha’s Power Gorge trigger all make the Tectomoc A/U combination a monster that really wants to flex down often. Alpha serves as a meat shield and attacks where there is not opening for alignment, while the Ultra pops out when he’s needed, smashes in for huge damage, then retreats again.
Overall, I think Tectomoc is a monster that will need some warming up to; I admit I wrinkled my nose a bit when I first read his stats. But the more I analyzed him, the more I came to appreciate who he is and what he does. There have been many monsters that weren’t given their due when they were first released, only to be found to be actually pretty tough on a second glance. My initial hunch is that Tectomoc may be one of those monsters.
What do you think? Let me know on the forum!

A shambling entity of cynicism, crudeness, and general grumpy disposition, Jeff "Tekkactus" (or just Tekk, for shortsies) Gum, spends his free hours with his brain hooked directly into all things socially awkward. When he's not drawing or writing for his webcomic Sandgate, Jeff is usually playing Monsterpocalypse, Magic: the Gathering, watching cartoons, reading comics (especially the web variety), or playing Pokemon.
