Released at midnight, Josh reviews a card that was just too good to wait another minute! Take a gander at this Green "Gifts Ungiven" after the jump!
Josh Elliott, Retired Writer
Released this morning at midnight, we have a card that was just too good not to talk about. When you think about some of the timeless cards in Magic, you think about those that are played in every format. They're played in casual and competitive both. Some cards are simply fun and good! The card that I bring to you guys today is one of those cards that is just going to see play everywhere:
That’s right this is a Green version of Gifts Ungiven, called by some the second best card draw spell/tutor ever to exist in the history of Magic. It's strength is only beaten by the amazing Ancestral Recall, and some might even say that Gifts Ungiven a better card than Fact or Fiction.
Realms Uncharted obviously doesn’t just get you any card in your deck like Gifts Ungiven does, but it is cheaper than Gifts, and is going to be amazing in a slew of decks. Combine this with any recursion card such as Life from the Loam or Cruicible of Worlds and you are going to get access to all four of those lands you fetch. This means that decks that want to assemble certain lands, such as Eye of Ugin, Tron pieces, or Dark Depths can use this as a tutor to set up some powerful plays. Even if you’re just looking to get more mana, you can simply pull two lands out of your deck to make sure you hit your land drops.
This is an amazing spell that Green has been wanting ever since Sylvan Scrying was printed in Mirrodin. I suspect it will immediately make a splash in Legacy, where powerful lands like Wasteland, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, and Thawing Glaciers are a huge part of the metagame. Even in Standard, a Realms Uncharted package can get you manlands or fetchlands to power up your Landfall spells like Rampaging Baloths, and it makes Knight of the Reliquary even more spectacular.
I’m hoping some sort of Regrowth effect is in Rise of the Eldrazi. While Realms Uncharted is definitely already good, an effect like this will just push this card over the top and make it amazing in even the most limited of constructed formats (Standard, I'm looking at you).
So that’s it for this time, just a short review because this card couldn’t wait. I’ll be back again later with all of the cards we will hopefully see out this weekend!
