The first gameplay trailer for Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock is out and it's, well, perhaps not quite what fans were expecting from the time-traveling man-in-a-box. While a fantastic series of point-and-click adventure games based on the show have graced Europe, the PS3 and Vita-bound Eternity Clock is more of a side-scrolling platformer. Check out the trailer below:
I do appreciate the developers at Supermassive Games really committing to the series' time-traveling aesthetic, to the point where they pretend it's still 1994 when every licensed game inevitably became a 2D platformer. Don't get me wrong, I love me a good platformer, it just doesn't seem like the right fit for Doctor Who. Doctor Who has always been more about brains over brawn and discovery over destruction, for which the recent Sherlock Holmes games provide a near perfect template.
Oh well, I'm sure it will be a perfectly fine game in its own right. It just seems like a missed opportunity where players could get the chance to really explore the Doctor Who universe rather than simply watch it unfold. In any case, the cast of villains is pretty solid, with classics like the Daleks, Cybermen, and Silurians joined by The Silence.
The game itself looks like it will allow for two player co-op, with one player as the Doctor and the other controlling River Song. They can work together to get past obstacles, and presumably have their own unique strengths. River is shown shooting enemies with a blaster, so the traditionally pacifist Doctor will surely brandish his sonic screwdriver for some equally vital role.
Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock is set to release at some point in March 2012 for PS3 and PS Vita.
